Casting Hope # 13

Escape from Chad

In this podcast: Theo Assare and Elizabeth Goldsmith. Theo talks to Mark Taylor about the praiseworthy efforts of two Theovision staff who continued to record material after rebels started a short war in Chad recently. This interview was recorded in Chad, last week. Recording conditions were pretty poor, and outside temperatures were in the low 40's centigrade! Elizabeth's talk was recorded at the Feba/FEBC international conference held earlier this year near London, when it was much colder.

Matthew 1:1-17 (New International Version)

The Genealogy of Jesus

1 A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham:

2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,

4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,

5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse,

6 and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,

7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa,

8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah,

9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,

10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah,

11and Josiah the father of Jeconiah[a] and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,

13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor,

14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud,

15 Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,

16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

They will know ...

A heart-warming way to end 2007 - an interview with Denny and Sue, a couple Mark Taylor came across during a trip in Africa this year. Their story of love for children in crisis is an outstanding example of how others will know we are Christians - by our love. The music at the end is by the Mark Swayze Band.

Hijacked in South Africa

Jon Hargreaves and Sean Mackenzie hijack the first part of the show to talk about Sean's upcoming move to start new radio projects in Nepal. Mark Taylor then talks with Petrus Moolman, National Director of Feba South Africa, about why he is looking northwards in his own country, and brings us up to date with staff changes and strategic shifts in Feba South Africa's ministry. And, seeing it is the Christmas season, we close with The Podsafe Christmas Song, compliments of Jonathan Coulter.

Casting Hope # 7

Is this a cushy number?

Norman Brierley and Mark Taylor recently spent two weeks in several locations in Southern Sudan. They went looking to strengthen mission friendships, attend the Cush Consultation, and look for new possibilities for meaningful ministry in Africa's largest country.

What is in this show?

Mark talks with John Kwech, a leader in the Sudan Community Church - Dr Rob Conda's presentation about the state of health services in Sudan he gave at the Cush Consultation in Yei, September 2007 - Norman Brierley, Area Development Director for North and East Africa talks about Feba's possible partnerships with ACROSS and CUSH FOR CHRIST.

The church singing at close of the Podcast was recorded at the Sudan Pentecostal Church in Aweil, in Northern Bahr Al Gazhr State. The cows walking by during interviews were real! Norman survived his being whacked by a football during recording.

Sudan Overview

The Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) of 2005 ended the war between Sudan's Muslim and mainly Arab north and its black, Christian and animist south, This war, with occasional truces, has been reality for the more than 50 years since independence from Britain, and has cost 2 million lives. The CPA requires joint implementation by the ruling Islamist National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudanese Peoples" Liberation Movement (SPLM), equal sharing of oil revenues from the south's abundant reserves, and a referendum in 2011 for the people of the south to decide if they want to secede and become a fully independent country. The north-south border is persistently contested and tense, despite a CPA clause that both sides will accept independent arbitration to fix the boundary.

A return to war is quite possible. Southerners are very suspicious of the northern government, and want to see significant progress by January 2008, threatening to leave the national government as walk away from the CPA. War would probably be centred upon oil fields in the disputed border regions, indicated by SPLM claims that 16,000 northern soldiers are dug in around these fields, acting as undisciplined 'oil police". The SPLM continuously train its own soldiers, and it is estimated they could muster 70,000 former guerrillas to an army, although discipline, equipment, and unity are problematic.

The CPA is supposed to be moving towards a joint command of northern and southern troops in disputed areas, but the mood is tense as the Khartoum government seem unwilling to let go of areas the south could well win in elections due in 2009. Oil, is of course, at stake - perhaps as much as 6 million barrels a day, and plans for pipelines through Congo to the Atlantic Ocean and through Kenya to the Indian Ocean.

The UN has 10,000 peacekeepers in the south, but none are in any of the hotly contested areas. Experienced Sudan watchers describe the current scenario as 'fuel on the ground - all it needs is a match'.

Southern Sudan in Profile

Southern Sudan has a land mass of about 640,000 square kilometres, with an estimated population ranging between 7.5 and 9.7 million. Population growth between now and 2011 is estimated at 3 million, mostly caused by the return the return of refugees and internally displaced people.

The signing of the CPA in January 2005 ended more than two decades of hostilities between the North and South. As a result, the Government of National Unity (GNU) and the Government of South Sudan (GoSS) have been established, to form a Confederation system for governance under the rubric of one country, two systems.

Southern Sudan is currently in a recovery and development phase, with humanitarian needs in abundance. There has been a mass return of Internally Displaced People and refugees to the South between now and the signing of the CPA. Turning the GoSS into a viable institution of good governance is proving very hard to accomplish. Elections promised for 2007 rely upon a census to be conducted, and delaying tactics by the Northern government are talked about in the South all the time. The GoSS aims at political elections in 2007, which should pave the way for a referendum on self determination in 2011.

Many years of civil conflict ensured massive or near total destruction of the physical infrastructure in Southern Sudan. Most buildings lie in dilapidated states; most roads remain impassable by even four-wheel drive vehicle, and many roads have yet to be de-mined. A large portion of the country is often inaccessible for more than half of the year (especially during the rainy season) save for air transport to particular locations.

Institutional structures for basic services are non existent, and Southern Sudan has a very limited human resource capacity that could be enrolled in the development of civil society.

Casting Hope # 6

Welcome, Mr Ambassador

Jeremy Rolph, a student at St. Andrew's High School in Worthing was in the building this week as part of a work experience adventure with Feba - so of course we had to show him how to make a podcast, and get him to do the voice-over bits for us. Well done, Jeremy!

What is in this show?

Chris Binstead talks about his role as Feba's ambassador in the UK. he also tells us about the Partners for Hope and the Feba Supporters Trip to India in early 2008.

The podsafe music in today's show came from http://www.magnatune.com/:

The band is a group that has been together since the 1970s, and they call themselves Thursday Group. The track is called Turtle Spin, from the CD called Uncle Mean. Quite jazzy, with some funk, swing, and blues stirred in there.

This track is actually used by quite a well known podcast as its signature tune - so the prize of public fame by mention in a future show is up for the firts person to email and let me know which podcast uses Turtle Spin as its signature music.

The sound clip at the start of our opening signature includes the orginal Shortwave logo that Feba broadcast for many years from the Seychelles. It came from the opening bars of 'What a Friend we have in Jesus'.

    Have Suitcase Will Broadcast

We thought summer had got up and gone, but the past week has been nice weather in our part of the UK. Introducing the new 5th generation of the Chrysolite studio - also known as the studio in a suitcase

    What is in this show?

Tim Miller, Tony Knowles, and Paul Vernon talk about their work on the new Chrysolite. Unfortunately, Charles Randall was away on holiday, but we hope to get him onto a future podcast when he can wax lyrical about the design and purposes of the new mixer in the Chrysolite.

The podsafe music in today's show came from http://www.magnatune.com/:

The artist goes by Falik (his real name is Charlie Pecot) and the track is IKA, from the CD entitled DREAMS FROM THE MACHINE. Falik describes his music as a fusion of Middle Eastern, Greek, Celtic, and Baltic Folk influences. He calls that 'world fusion pop'. Why not check out Magnatune's free song of the day?

The sound clip at the start of our opening signature includes the original Short wave logo that Feba broadcast for many years from the Seychelles. It came from the opening bars of 'What a Friend we have in Jesus'.
